Comfort will be given to me by offering me breast milk or a sucrose solution before performing uncomfortable procedures.

My nurse will get you involved in my:

  • Mouth care: Link to NHS information website
  • Changing my nappy: Link to NHS information website
  • Giving my feeds as soon as I am strong enough: Link to NHS information website
  • Keep the unit as quiet as possible to promote sleep and hearing development: Link to NHS information website
  • It is your voice that is most important in the development of my listening skills, which helps me to develop language. Link to NHS information website
  • Provide short periods of soft rhythmic sounds, like singing softly, during the day when I am awake. I will enjoy hearing the sound of your voice talking to me softly. Reading books to me is a way to let me know that you are beside me.
  • You can also help my growth and development by supporting me in the correct position. Link to NHS information website
  • It is much more pleasant and more appropriate to be exposed to smells of breast milk and your natural smells. Link to NHS information website
  • If I cannot have precious cuddles that bring us close and help us to bond you can keep a piece of cloth on your person. This can then be placed next to me in the incubator so that I can be aware of your smell close to me. If you use two pieces of cloth it will be possible to swap so that you can have my smell too which will help your breast milk to flow. Link to NHS information website
